Pioneering new applications in aviation
In 1988, ASM International designated Praxair's Speedway laboratories as a historic landmark, where the first useful application of detonation waves in gases led to the invention of the detonation gun (D-Gun) process for plating metal and ceramic coatings on metal components. Prior to that date, SAE International had written an Aerospace Material Specification around the D-Gun process, featuring coatings in the tungsten carbide-cobalt family.
